Planning of Rural Development in Asia and the Pacific | Subtitle :
Abstract : A seminar on rural development planning (RDP) was held in Manila and Davao, the Philippines, in Dec. 1999. The objectives were to acquire a better appreciation of rural development issues and to discuss measures and approaches for strengthening capacity for RDP. The state of RDP in the following countries was presented: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Laos, Mongolia; Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Other subjects were: (1) current rural development issues in Asia and the Pacific; (2) outline of an RDP framework and designing rural development programmes; (3) financing and implementing rural development plans; (4) monitoring and evaluation of rural development programmes; (5) the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in rural development; and (6) environmental aspects of RDP. Generally, rural development programmes aimed at poverty alleviation have had little impact.
