Presents the papers given at the Conference on Cultures in ASEAN and the 21st Century, held in August 1995 at the National University of Singapore. Addresses three major themes taken in relation to the experience of each of the ASEAN nations: the making of national culture, contemporary cultural forces and counter farces, and cultural development towards the 21st century. Provides a thought-provoking account of the state of the cultures and the likely directions of their development. Concerns with some of the issues affecting the general historical and contemporary experience of the region, approaching mainly colonialism and modernization.
